New ORC Storage Shed

Thanks to the help of Doug Cox and Brien Holsapple, we’ve been granted permission to use a DePauw-owned shed out near the Prindle Institute. It’ll be a great asset for the club, and now we’ll be able to invest in a few mountain bikes.

We’ll also use the space to store some of Steve Timm’s kayaks, and if anyone else has some gear that they’re interested in storing out there, contact matthewsmoot_2009@depauw.edu.

Skiing and Wakeboarding (10-4-08)

Another successful trip out to Raccoon Lake. Kimmy and Betsy both got up on skis, John decided that he’s going to start a Ski Team in the spring, and Dan almost landed a backflip. Enjoy the photos.

Kimmy on the skis and out of the wake.

John ripping up  some smooth water.

Kriegs is happy that we let him drive.

And coming soon… The Backflip Video.

Kayaking Clinic (9-26-08)

Max Hudson organized and led this trip to Cataract Lake.

“A group of 5, including Steve Timm and myself, headed to the lake on Friday at about 4.  We had great weather for our beginner level kayaking clinic.  After a few basic instructions we paddled 3 miles or so around the scenic lake.  When we got back to our take-out we made a few attempts at more upper level maneuvers including rolling, which proved more difficult than expected.  The trip was a success and made possible by Professor Steve Timm who met the group at the lake with boats in tow.  “

Climbing @ The Gorge (9-19 through 9-21)

The seven of us packed up two cars on Friday afternoon and made it down to the Red River Gorge by 10pm (after a stop at the DQ Grill and Chill for dinner and a story about pitbulls killing chickens from a proud Kentuckian).

We climbed at two sites on Saturday – Practice Wall and Roadside Crag – and enjoyed some of the famous Miguel’s pizza in the evening, before Ross led a late-night guitar session featuring Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” and Blackstreet’s “No Diggity.”

Sunday morning was spent at Left Flank, where we all got up on two more routes and shared some intellectual conversation with two doctors in their fifties who were both better climbers than any of us. Dan made us leave then, because he said he had some kind of obligation back at school. Lame – I agree – but his forcing us to depart caused us to run into three white-bearded men sitting outside the convenience store. I think it’s safe to say that we’re all better people for having met them.

(Bearded Man’s Hand -v-)

Postscript: Pat and Ross attempted a 5.13. Bad. Ass.

Twilight Wakeboarding (9-11-08)

As the boat was being launched, there were seven us of standing on the dock. We were beneath the tin roof that shelters the DNR patrol boat, watching the Moomba get uncovered through a wall of rain flowing down off the roof. When we climbed into the boat, it was pouring.

After about thirty minuets, the rain stopped and we had a smooth lake to ourselves. Kelsey and Kanani both got up on a wakeboard for their first time ever, and Dan was landing a couple “Fashion Airs” about four feet beyond the far wake. We had John and Jeff tearing it up on the slalom ski too.

No one brought a camera, but i swear it looked just like this…
